Kite making

On Friday 26th of June room 1 and 2 set to work making wonderful kites for Matariki from the recycled materials they had brought especially from home.

We made these kites because of Matariki and because they symbol the connection between the sky and the earth for Maori and Matariki is the stars in the sky connecting to the earth.

The week before in the homework they had to research about kites and collect materials such as plastic bags (we can cut them up) for the base of our kite. In the middle block they got into groups of 2-4, some people went by themselves. I was in a group with Ella, Katy and Erin. Then they started to put all their ideas together on a piece of paper to create a plan. Then when everyone had finished their plan they started on their kites. When we had finished our kites we added feathers and other accessories which made it look more traditional.

There were prizes for different categories like the most traditional, best plan and peoples choice.

It was lots and lots of fun and we all enjoyed ourselves a lot.

Here are some pictures of us and our kites and of some other peoples too:

3d maths

Today for maths we have been learning about 3d shapes. We had to get a piece of isometric paper and and draw lots of 3d shapes.
Here is mine:

Prediction reading

For reading we were learning how to predict about what we read.
WE did a drawing about it. Read the paragraph below and have a look at my prediction.

Speed writing

We have been doing speed writing to improve how fast we write. This is mine.
19/6/15        When is it OK to lie
Lots of people lie to get out of trouble but some lie just to help their friends or save themselves. There is lots of different reasons to lie and these are just a few.

I think It is ok to lie when you have done nothing to get into jail but someone said you had done an crime. You could tell the jail guards that you work there and you are not the person they are looking for to get into jail. They would have to let you through because you would threaten to tell their boss on them.
You could also lie if your friend has been getting in trouble about something you and your friend did wrong and you are not getting in trouble for. You could tell them that it was just your fault and they had nothing to do with it. Then they would not get in as deep trouble and they would think you are a amazing friend.

But I do not recommend to lie even for these reasons.

Inquiry lab notes

We have been learning about light and we have to do a experiment about light. Mine is Can a plant grow in artificial light. Read all about what I am going to do.

How does light impact on life?
My question:
Can a plant grow in artificial light?

Controlled Variables
(What I keep the same)
Can a plant grow in artificial light?
One plant in the sun and one plant in the artificial light/ night light.
  • How tall they are.
  • How many flowers
  • How many leaves

  • Soil
  • Plants
  • Water
  • Same amount of time in their type of light

  • By hypothesis is:
If I put a plant in artificial light I think that it will get all shriveled up.

    Materials
    • 2 flowers in pots
    • Night light
    • Sun
    • Water
    • Cardboard box

    Experimental Setup

    1. Plant your 2 plants
    2. In the morning give both the plants ⅓ of a cup of water each.
    3. Put one of the plants in the sun and the other in the cardboard box.
    4. When it is night time put the one which was in the cardboard box next to the nightlight and turn it on. Leave the other flower where it was.
    5. The next morning do the exact same steps as above
    6. Observe the the plants and see which one grows better

    Garden maths

This week I have been learning about measurement and shapes.
I have learned about how to measure the area and perimeter.

I learned how to work out the area and perimeter of each building using a ruler. I also learned how to add the length, width, volume and height together.

The trickiest part was working out the grass and the area and timing it by $3 for each square meter because we had to split up the grass into small pieces and then add all the totals together not using the calculator. I found out that grass costs a lot of money!

I enjoyed choosing the place where I put the shed the pond the sand pit and the deck because it got me thinking where each thing would be safe if they had kids but still easy to get to.

Next time I am going to make the pond closer to the house. I am also going too add extra things like a swing set and a spa pool.

    This is my garden

    Science plant for room 2

Yesterday we started growing a plant in a shoe box. The people in my group were Ella, Amy, Olivia and Me. All the shoe boxes had a different thing happening to them like

    • Red light
    • Green light
    • Purple light
    • Artificial light
    • No light
    • Lots of holes
    • Normal light

We put lots of holes all over the sides of the box then we created a maze type thing for the plant to grow through. We did this because we were learning about light.

Our objective is how light impacts on plants.

Our hypothesis is if we put holes in the side of the box it will grow curvy.

So far our plant has grown 19cm and yesterday it 17cm.

    19/6/15
Grown 2 cm it is now 19cm

    22/6/15
    Grown 4cm is now 23cm

Today I have noticed that it is growing well and no leaves are dying. It is not growing curvy but it probably will grow like that very soon. The obstacle  have not stopped it growing.

    Mind lab

Yesterday we went on a mind blowing trip to the mind lab.

I learnt all about colour blindness and moving robotic cars by programming them to follow light.

My favorite part was making the robotic cars move using light because it was interesting to watch them move around with out us controlling them with a remote.

The trickiest part was the colour blind part where we had to redraw our pictures in the colour that they would look like if someone was blind. Imagine going for a walk in the bush and only seeing grey trees!

I discovered that colour blind people see things differently to us and there are 3 different colour blinds Red, Blue and green which are all primary colours.

This was the place where we sat while they explained what we were going to do.

When we got back I did a fact or fib about  mind lab.
Guess which one of these statements is right.

    17/6/15
    1. We used the computer to program our robotic cars to move towards light using the computer.

    2. Mind lab was situated in the Auckland university.

    3. Me and my buddy had no problems programming our car.

    School maths

We have been learning about area and perimeter. We had to make a school with all the buildings it needs and work out the area and perimeter. We used the scale a meter = a centimeter. We used the grid paper in our maths book here is my school:

Here are the measurements for the area and perimeter

My favorite part was working out the area and perimetre.

The trickest part was working out the area of shapes like this:
