Young leaders day

William Pike
On Thursday all the student leaders went to young leaders day: We had to get to school at 7:30 and left at 8:00. We got split into groups and traveled with out group in the parents car. When we arrived we got a blue wristband on our wrist.  Next we got into our seats and the speakers told us what was going to happen.
The first speaker was William pike. Next Rukumoana. Then Rylie and Steve. Soon after Darrel. Next Phinex. Then Corban and Alex. Last but not least Jamie Mcdell.

My favorites were Jamie Mcdell and William Pike.

I remember poetry Cross Country

Today we went to cross country. I came 11th in the 10 year old race. When we got back I wrote this poem about it.

WALT write a write a piece of poetry that puts images in the reader's mind

That was Cross Country

Remember the butterflies flying around and around in your tummy as you waited tentatively for your race to start.

Remember the smell of the dust spraying and the ground vibrating fiercely as all the runners zoomed past you after just starting the race.

That was Cross Country

Remember the dry taste in your throat as you jogged slowly on the crumbly sand .

Remember seeing your friend panting and sweating beside you as you overtook them.

That was Cross Country

Remember the pain shooting through your leg as you humped swiftly over the hurdles.

Do you remember the sound of the tremendously loud shouting as you crossed the finish line panting for breath but still feeling very proud.

That was Cross Country

Light Think Link

I did a think link about light:

Daily 5

Every day for reading we do something called daily 5.
We have a time table which has 4 sessions.
On most of the sessions we get to choose what we do but some we get assigned tasks like teach or KWL's about what we have been learning.
I like this daily 5 more than the other reading that we used to because we know what we need to do and do not have to waste out time waiting for the teacher to tell us.

The tasks we can choose from are:
RS=Read to self
RSO=Read to someone
W=Writing
WW=Word work
LR=Listening to reading
IP=Picking some books to read

Science day

On Friday we did 6 different experiments involving light:
Here is the link to the experiments if you want to try them out.
Here are some cool games to do with light:

http://www.primarygames.com/puzzles/strategy/rainbowmechanic/
http://www.sciencekids.co.nz/gamesactivities/howwesee.html

My favorite thing was the prism experiment.
We had to use a torch and mirrors and shine it through a prism creating a rainbow.
It made a rainbow because the white light is made of lots of different colours and when it goes through a prism it refracts creating all the colours of the rainbow.

The hardest part was the angles and reflections experiment.
We had to see how many Lego blocks reflected into the mirror the closer the angle was together.

My favorite part was the part was when we had to see which ice cube would melt quickest on what peice of colored paper. I found out that the darkest one melted the quickest.

My group worked best as a team
during the experiment when we had to guess if the light would shine through the object.
We had a sheet and we had to fill in if we thought if it would be transparent, opaque or translucent.

Scooter training

On Wednesday we did scooter training.
We learnt how to do emergency breaking and the helmet salute.
It was lots of fun and I got a yellow slap swatch which said stop, look and listen before you cross the road.

Thunderstorms reading

Image result for Thunderstorms
We have been learning about thunderstorms.

We got lots of great information from a book about thunder and lightning.
Then we did a KWL in our group this is it:

K

  • That thunder and lightning
happens during a storm.
  • Lightning is made out of static electricity.
  • You know how far away if you count the seconds away from the lightning.
  • If you get hit by lightning you can get electrocuted and get really hurt

W

  • How does lightning get made and  where does the electricity come from?
  • Why does the USA have more thunderstorms than us?
  • Can you use lighting give power to things?
L

  • That during a thunderstorm you should not use electric things taps and sinks and even `TV’s because the erieal attracts lightning.
  • You know that there is going to be an thunderstorm when it is an humid day and when the clouds are billowing and becoming black .
  • Metal objects get attracted to lighting and it you are under something metal you can get electrocuted.
  • Positive and negative energy go together and makes lighting.

How do snails move

cooltext118130320014832.png
We have been learning about how to write explations:
We looked at how real snails move and then took notes these are my notes:

  • The snail uses their one foot to push them along.
  • They move side to side which is called undulating
  • Snails mostly move on a flat surface
  • When they move they make a trail of slime called mucus
  • The snail trail is stick this allows they to travel upside down, Sideways and straight
  • The slime protects them when they move along.
  • They have lines underneath their body.
  • They have an shell so when they are moving an preditor can't bite them because the shell is in the way.
  • Snails eat a variety of food found in their natural habitat.
  • Land snails move by gliding along their muscular foot. This motion is powered by succeeding waves of muscular contractions that move down the ventral of the foot.
  • They leave a slimy trail behind.
  • Snails have a curly spiral on their shell
  • Snails eat a variety of food found in their natural habitat.
  • Alot of people find snails gross and ugly.
  • one of the main reasons why snails die is because they become food for other animals.
  • Most of their body of the snail is called the foot.
  • A snail moves on his slime/ mucus when he goes fast the snail's mucus  becomes more slippery and it can go even faster.
  • As they move the mucus comes out of the front right out of an hole in the foot.
  • It can live from 5-25 years depending if an bird of animal eats them.

Here are some pictures we took white looking at the snails:

Book review

This is a great story in a series of 4 books.
The main character is called Hayley.
Her parents have just divorced and her mum has lost her job and home so they have to share a tiny apartment above her grandma's Tea room/ cafe.
Now the head PTA leader is thinking of banning bringing baking and sweets to share at school all because her daughter Meghan is gluten intolerant.
Hayley thinks this is devastating because her Favorite thing to do is to bake cupcakes and bring them in to share.
Meghan (PTA leaders daughter) thinks this is unfair so her and Hayley put up a fight to save the cupcake.
They get lots of people to sign their name to say the think this is a bad idea then they have to go to the PTA meeting and fight for what's right.
They do not win but it is a great story anyway.

I think this is a great book for 6-11 year olds.
It is exciting and some parts leave you in suspense.
I rate it 9/10

How does light impact on our life?

We have been learning about how light impacts on our life this is our big idea
I did a padlet:

A day in the trenches

We had a day in the trenches and made trenches out of tables, Chairs and blankets
Here is some pictures of us:

It was lots of fun!

We Have been learning about explanations

Anzac day ceremony

At school we had an assembly to remember all the people who fought in the Anzac War:

This is some students placing the reef that I helped make:

Then we raised the NZ Flag on our school flag pole:

Then we ate Anzac cookies that we made:

Reading

For reading we had to look in a book which showed us the time table of the world war 1.

We had to put all the timetables in the right order and stick it all together!

Here is a picture of us doing it:

Light

We have been learning about light:
Everyone in room 1 and 2 had to write their ideas of what is light on this padlet:
Scroll down to see more ideas
When we finished this we finished this we had to try and join a word about light with it's meaning.
After that we had to write what light means.
