Auckland Zoo!

Yesterday room 1&2 went for an amazing trip to Auckland Zoo! We had this trip because we have been learning about Endangered animals and this was the perfect place to learn more information.

We left at 9:20am and took the half an hour drive to the Auckland Zoo. By the time we got there it was morning tea time. After the morning tea we split into our groups of 5 people and started trouping around the zoo. We saw lots of animals in the first half an hour like the Red Pandas, Otters, Tigers, Baboons, Orangutan's and much, much more. Just before lunch time, we went and watched the Red pandas and the Otters getting fed. I learnt that the Otters like eating sea food like shrimps and that around 97% of the Red Pandas diet was bamboo and the other 3 percent is things like grass and seeds!

After lunch we split. Groups 1-5 went to learn about tracking and groups 7-10 went to learn about palm oil. At the palm oil station we learnt about deforestation and animals losing their homes in the forests.The activities we did in this station were trying to open jars and bags with out a thumb (because this is what an Orangutan has to do).

Here are some products which contain palm oil

At the tracking station we had to work in buddies and use the tracking tunnels to identify what foot prints goes with what animal and if they are pests or pals. After that we went for an other little walk around the zoo and we saw the 14 golden Lion Tamerin getting fed by a zoo keeper. She fed them bananas, pear and carrots. The zoo keepers has to memorize all the names of the animals it looks after! After that we took the bus back to school. It was an awesome trip!

What I learnt:
  • An Orangutan is 97% like us!
  • 1 out of every 10 products in the super market contains palm oil.
  • Palm oil is not bad for you but it is not good because it causes deforestation.
  • People use tracking tunnels so they can learn what animals live on the island.
  • How a tracking tunnel works is someone puts ink in the middle if a black tube. On the other side they put peanut butter. When the creature walks through the tunnel to get the peanut butter it walks through the ink and leaves tracks.
  • A hedgehog is a pest
Here are some pictures and videos:

Inquiry! Task 4

For inquiry we had to do tasks which I wrote about in other posts. This is about task 4:
We had to get into buddies and make a movie:

For task 4 we had to make a script this is our script:
Purple=Stella
Pink=Courtney
Red=Together
Green=Tiger

Today we are broadcasting in a rainforest searching for the critically endangered South China tiger.

We have been told that they are possibly extinct in the wild and we want to find the tiger to prove them wrong.

In the 1950s there was a population of 4,000 individual South China Tigers but they were hunted as pests,

ROAR i’m not a pest!!! did you know that our species  will be extinct in less in 10 years!

OMG i think we just heard a south china tiger!
lets go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(As we are running) Anyway, by 1996 the population was estimated to be just 30-80 individual tigers.
The Chinese government banned hunting south china tigers in 1979 to save their population.
WOW! thats not a lot of south china tigers and that was only 19 years ago!
Look over there.
Its a south china tiger!
Wooooo hooooo we found it!
Look, he is eating something
Do you think it's a cow?,
Yes, did you know that the South China Tiger’s main prey is deer, cattle and wild boar.
No, I guess you learn something new every day.
Well, tune in next time to find out more about this amazing animal!!!!!!
Bye, Bye

Then we had to make a plan for our movie:

1

We will be peaking over the top of the bush introducing what we are doing the documentary about.

We will be wearing something like a jumper over our school top.

Money week

This past week has been money week. Today we played a money game made especially for this week. It was lots of fun and taught us a tot of things about saving and adding money.

Here are some questions we had to answer:

What are the benefits we gain for keeping track of our income and spending?
We don't go bankrupt and spend all our money and we know how much money we have.

What risks did you encounter in the game?
Having to spend money on things that you didn't want to buy.
You have no money left and you still have to buy something so you have to have negative money.

What effects did these risks have on meeting your saving goal?
It made us have less money and lose the money. Usually we get some money than had to spend it.

What were the rewards you encountered in the game?
You got money for doing chores.

For inquiry we had to get into buddies and work on projects this is Task 2
Task 2

View this movie trailer - here
View this documentary about Palm Oil

Answer the following questions:
  1. What is palm oil?

Palm oil is an type of oil made from the fruits of the palm trees.

  1.           What is palm oil used in?

Some things are Chocolate because it gives it a shiny look and texture. Cookies because it gives the cookies a creamy texture and taste. Pizza dough because it makes it not stick together and gives it a nice texture.

  1. How much demand is there for palm oil?

In America 40-50% of the packaged food has palm oil in it.

  1. How is palm oil produced?

You grow the palms then pick the fruit. You find the oil in the middle of the fruit.

  1. How much forest is cleared every year for oil palm plantations?

48-56 thousand square miles are cleared of forest each year

  1. What does this mean for the species that live there?

It means that they are losing their homes in the trees and their habitat so they die out.

After answering these questions view the Palm Oil Free Shopping Guide.

Find 3 food items on the list, that you enjoy that do not have palm oil in them. List them here:
  • Biscuits
  • Deserts
  • Muesli bars and snack bars

Design a lunchbox menu, using palm oil free products. You can create a document.
